I’m a little behind on this month’s events post… but fortunately, there’s a lot happening the second half of this month!
Buy Fresh, Buy Local Farm Tour 2010
Saturday, July 24
Locations throughout the region
$10 per car
Grab a map or load up the GPS, then pile in the car to visit some of your favorite fruit, veggie, dairy and meat-producing local farms. I had a fantastic time on the 2009 Farm Tour, visiting Triple B Berry Farm, Morris Organic Farm and Jamison Farm – see the sheep above. It’s one-up on the Farmer’s Market because not only do you get to meet the farmers, you actually get to walk through the fields, and maybe even pick your own food. For a city girl like me, it was practically vacation.
Of Course U Can! Pickling Madness
Sunday, July 25
Fern Hollow Nature Center in Sewickley
$15
Overwhelmed by the bounty of summer? Learn to preserve – this time, pickles. I have fond memories of my parents stewing tomatoes, peaches and plums. Those plums were delicious, and easy to eat really fast – and if we ever meet in person, ask me to act out the story about when I choked one. Suffice to say, there were no more plums canned after that year, so traumatic for my mother was that experience. Anyhoo… Register online. And in the mean time, here are some canning recipes from Big Burrito’s Bill Fuller.
Good Fridays Wine Tasting
Friday, July 30 – 5:30 – 7:30pm
Warhol Museum
$20
The last Friday of every month, Big Burrito and Dreadnought Wines get together at the Warhol for an evening of art, wine and tasty snacks. DJ Zombo provides the music, and you get to wander the museum with a glass of wine in your hand for just a few dollars more than you’d pay to wander it without. Everyone wins!
