Chocolate Chip Blondies

Chocolate Chip and Pecan Blondies

July 28, 2010 Cookies

After 20 years of faithfulness to a single chocolate chip cookie recipe, I’m starting to stray. These blondies are caramelly and chewy, requiring only 5 minutes of “hard labor” and 25 minutes of oven time.

Blueberry Scones

Blueberry Scones

June 20, 2010 Breads and Pizzas

This recipe made me a scone believer: a flaky, buttery dough surrounding juicy blueberries.

Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread

Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread, Take 1

January 17, 2010 Breads and Pizzas

My 2010 experiment is to see if I get into a habit of making bread at home. This is attempt #1 at a homemade, mostly whole wheat sandwich bread. I wanted a one-day bread that used mostly whole wheat flour.

Chocolate Peppermint Bark Cookies

Chocolate Peppermint Bark Cookies

December 16, 2009 Cookies

What we’ve got here is a basic shortbread base topped with melted dark chocolate, crushed peppermint candies and a drizzle of white chocolate ganache. These were supposed to be my go-to party cookies this year: beautiful, festive, and eye-rollingly delicious. Fortunately, they’re also easy and fun to make.

Challah

Challah for the Goyim

November 8, 2009 Breads and Pizzas

This is the first in a two-part post, and let me assure you, this challah is going to turn into something that you really want to eat. But first, I wanted to sing the praises of challah by itself. I’ve made it three times now – each time gets a little better – and this goy girl knows that challah is the bread for brunch.

Daring Bakers: Bakewell Tart

June 27, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

The June Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Jasmine of Confessions of a Cardamom Addict and Annemarie of Ambrosia and Nectar. They chose a Traditional (UK) Bakewell Tart… er… pudding that was inspired by a rich baking history dating back to the 1800′s in England.

Salt, Chocolate, Perfection

March 23, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

This tart is Salt and Chocolate nirvana. The salt is all the way through the crust, so you get a good smack of it in every bite. And it’s no dinky chocolate-covered pretzel either; this is big, thick chocolate, not a thin waxy coating. Get the best milk chocolate you can afford, as you’re going to be tasting it.

Daring Bakers: Flourless Chocolate Cake

February 28, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

It was time. I couldn’t put it off any more. I became a Daring Baker, a culinary lunatic goddess obsessed with testing a challenging new recipe each month with hundreds of other bakers around the globe. And a three-ingredient flourless chocolate cake should be simple, right? Burghilicious baking hubris, exposed.

Christmas Morning Coffee Cake

December 26, 2008 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

This coffee cake has been a Christmas tradition in my family for as long as I can remember. It stems, oddly enough, from summer vacation. My step-dad’s family had a cottage in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, where we stayed for a week every summer when I was young. Every year, I could count on a fancy breakfast at the White Gull Inn, where my stepdad ordered buckwheat pancakes, I hoped for an overflowing bowl of fresh berries, and we always shared the coffee cake. At some point, my mom purchased the hotel’s cookbook, and the rest was history.

Merry Christmakkah Cookies

December 24, 2008 Cookies

Thin Mints, that epitome of Girl Scout cookies and wintertime salve of chocolate-mint addictions. Fine, the Samoas are great with the coconut and chocolate, and Tagalongs are the cookie version of Reese’s peanut butter cups. Whatever. Thin Mints are iconic.
