Alice Waters Apple Tart

Alice Waters’ Apple Tart

November 16, 2011 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

This apple tart has just a few ingredients: butter, flour, sugar, salt, and of course, apples. There’s not any cinnamon, nor indeed spices of any kind at all. You don’t even have to use a pan – we’re talking way simple.

Chocolate Truffle Cupcakes

Chocolate Truffle Cupcakes

October 11, 2010 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

I am an unabashed cake and frosting lover. These are the moistest, most chocolaty, cocoa-packed cupcakes I’ve ever had, topped with feather-light whipped meringue frosting. In fact, they were so good that I was compelled to bake them twice in three weeks.

Daring Bakers: Puff Pastry

September 27, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

Puff pastry was far from a disaster, but it was the most physically demanding challenge to date, as I had to push so hard on my rolling pin that the heels of my hands were bruised for two days afterwards. After suffering* thusly, you can bet I would have broken a window or a least eaten some ice cream right out of the carton if the darn stuff hadn’t puffed. But it did puff. #&@%*.

Black, White, Red, Eaten

September 9, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

I admit, I was hanging on as long as I could. After all, summer never seems to last long enough. And I had to have strawberry shortcake at least once. Chocolate strawberry shortcake, that is.

Daring Bakers: Dobos Torte

August 27, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

This, dear friends, is a Dobos Torte: layer upon layer of vanilla sponge cake separated by rich chocolate buttercream, then topped with a caramel-covered cake layer and garnished with hazelnuts. And I have the Daring Bakers’ August challenge to thank for it!

Daring Bakers: Bakewell Tart

June 27, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

The June Daring Bakers’ challenge was hosted by Jasmine of Confessions of a Cardamom Addict and Annemarie of Ambrosia and Nectar. They chose a Traditional (UK) Bakewell Tart… er… pudding that was inspired by a rich baking history dating back to the 1800′s in England.

Salt, Chocolate, Perfection

March 23, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

This tart is Salt and Chocolate nirvana. The salt is all the way through the crust, so you get a good smack of it in every bite. And it’s no dinky chocolate-covered pretzel either; this is big, thick chocolate, not a thin waxy coating. Get the best milk chocolate you can afford, as you’re going to be tasting it.

Daring Bakers: Flourless Chocolate Cake

February 28, 2009 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

It was time. I couldn’t put it off any more. I became a Daring Baker, a culinary lunatic goddess obsessed with testing a challenging new recipe each month with hundreds of other bakers around the globe. And a three-ingredient flourless chocolate cake should be simple, right? Burghilicious baking hubris, exposed.

Christmas Morning Coffee Cake

December 26, 2008 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

This coffee cake has been a Christmas tradition in my family for as long as I can remember. It stems, oddly enough, from summer vacation. My step-dad’s family had a cottage in Fish Creek, Wisconsin, where we stayed for a week every summer when I was young. Every year, I could count on a fancy breakfast at the White Gull Inn, where my stepdad ordered buckwheat pancakes, I hoped for an overflowing bowl of fresh berries, and we always shared the coffee cake. At some point, my mom purchased the hotel’s cookbook, and the rest was history.

Apples, Cake, Caramel, Cream Cheese

November 16, 2008 Pies, Tarts and Cakes

right around Halloween, I was craving a cake that combined apples and caramel but still had a real frosting, preferably cream cheese. Such a recipe did not exist, so I had to make one up. I’ll admit: this is my first-ever original cake recipe. I will also admit that it rocks. Hard-core.
