January 19, 2011 News & Views

My first rule of travel is “Don’t buy souvenirs. Eat them instead.” In December, I had my first opportunity in 32 long years to go to San Francisco, and man-oh-man did I put that rule to work. I munched my way through the city, with the occasional stop at a museum to pass the time between meals. In case you are planning a trip of your own, here are my top tips on making the most of a foodie vacation. Oh, and there’s a bit of Burghilicious news at the end.

November 15, 2010 Outside Pittsburgh

The Philly Cheesesteak Mafia is going to put a hit on me for this post, I just know it. But since the sandwiches are all tasty, I’ve developed a scientific method for choosing the cheesesteak that’s right for you.

Columbus: The Short North

April 7, 2010 Outside Pittsburgh

In a surprise getaway to Columbus, just 3 hours away, we feasted on sushi, sampled delicious (and cheap!) wines, gobbled a fantastic brunch and wandered through an enviable market. Here’s where we went.

February 8, 2010 Appetizers & Drinks

When you think of wine country, you might think Sonoma. If you’re me, you think Oregon, Grand Traverse and Niagara. But you could save yourself a great deal of time and money by thinking Pennsylvania.

The Best French Toast Sandwich

November 11, 2009 Breakfast Dishes

Last Christmas – yes, almost a year ago! – Scheidt and I finagled a stop to see Lisa in the Land of Cleve, who knew exactly what restaurant she wanted her food blogger friend to try: Melt, the grilled cheese restaurant. Lisa was the big winner when she ordered this sandwich.

Eating Up “Le Grand Traverse”

August 7, 2009 Outside Pittsburgh

I Ate a Hole in the West Village

April 7, 2008 Outside Pittsburgh

A week ago, I had a whirlwind, fabulous, exhausting, gluttonous trip to New York. New Jersey, really, but I logged enough hours at the Port Authority bus terminal to qualify as a real NYC commuter. It’s pretty rare that anything within a three-hour’s drive is covered in that esteemed publication, so of course I put it on my calendar. My [...]

September 17, 2007 Outside Pittsburgh

It may surprise you to find out that there are not many Korean restaurants in Alma, Michigan, where I grew up, so it’s not really an accident that I have made it 29 years without sampling the delights of the Korean peninsula. Here in the ‘Burgh, it’s easy to find Thai food and Japanese. I’m [...]
