We interrupt the regularly scheduled monthly Pittsburgh food events post to bring you this special bulletin:
Pittsburgh bloggers Joe and Betsy have made it to the top 12 of Foodbuzz’s Project Food Blog.
Pittsburgh, you know what we do when our team is on the line for the championship.
We band together. We turn out in droves. We do what needs to be done.
Because if there’s one thing Pittsburghers love, it’s freaking Pittsburgh. And if there’s a second thing, it’s food.*
But first, in case you aren’t following…
Project Food Blog is an international competition for food bloggers run by Foodbuzz. It’s been going on since September and I’m going to be honest: a lot of it has been unbearably boring. I should know; I’ve clicked my share of links in this competition.
I have a food blog, and I’ll be the first to admit: while writing style and exact topics might vary, most food blogs are pretty much the same. We like food, we make food, we take pictures (of varying quality) of food, we give you the recipe for food. Sometimes we go to restaurants, eat the food and tell you about the food. And while I love food blogs, the formula can get boring. When you’re looking at 700 contestants who are all pretty much the same, it can get reaaaaaaaaally boring.
That’s why I think you should go vote for Joe and Betsy.
While their blog isn’t strictly a food blog most of the time – they’ve been chronicling their first year of marriage in a series called Project NEW-lyweds – they have creamed, whipped and pulverized the competition in Project Food Blog with their sheer creativity.
On top of that, they have consistently gone overboard on challenge after challenge. It’s one thing to challenge twelve dishes in a weekend once. It’s something else to do that week after week after week, and to do it well. I’d say they’ve lapped the competition multiple times. For instance:
- Creating a dinner party menu around the color wheel
- Pizza prepared four ways, including frozen (the challenge was just “make some pizza”)
- Figuring out how to make four sandwiches into one (the challenge was “go on a picnic”)
- Making 26 different pumpkin baked goods in one week (and the challenge was to make ONE pumpkin baked good)
And in the video challenge, when other contestants were, for the most part, making Food-Network-Wannabe demo tapes, Joe and Betsy were making this freaking sweet stop-motion animation of beef stew. Take a look.
I cannot even begin to imagine how long it took to make that. I get antsy trying to get three pictures for a post.
So instead of directing you to food events this December, I’m directing you straight over to Foodbuzz. Because if Joe and Betsy win, they win a bajillion dollars, and we already have proof that Betsy can cook 26 different baked goods in one week… meaning the party will be awesome.**
Rally for the Burgh! Send Joe and Betsy to the finals! Go vote. You only have until Friday!

*OK, fine, maybe the Steelers and/or the Pens come in number 2. But food is at least in the top 3.
**I get to be invited, right?
