Pittsburgh Food Events – May 2010

in Pittsburgh Food Events

So this is the time of year when I typically disappear. The day job tends to get a little out of control, and frankly, I start eating pasta with butter and garlic salt for every meal. (Last year, we were also refinishing the hardwood – double whammy, except for that lasagna.)

But not this year – I swears it! This year, I will continue to 1. Eat reasonable food that is made at home and 2. Take one or two hours a week to tell you about it. If nothing else, I can work through my backlog (cinnamon rolls! cookies with white chocolate, oats and cranberries! spicy chocolate ice cream!). But right now, it’s time for May food events, and I’m totally excited. Summer is almost here!

Farmers @ FirehouseFarmers @ Firehouse Opening Day
Saturday, May 8, 9am until the food runs out (usually 12 or 1)
2216 Penn Avenue, Strip District
The Farmer’s Market is back! True, for the first few weeks it will be mostly plants, greens and herbs, but hey, what’s wrong with that? I get a farm box from Penn’s Corner, and Farmers @ Firehouse is a great place to meet many of the farmers who contribute to the box – and pick up items that they didn’t have enough of to include in the box.  If nothing else, fresh goat cheese alone provides a reason to go. Oh, and that Mediterra bread I’m always jonesing for, without the grocery store markup.

Be a Farmer Classes
Starting May 10 for four weeks
There are about 1.2 million farmers in the U.S., many of whom are in the late stages of their careers, who are producing food for us 350+ million Americans. If you think there might be a niche for you, you’re probably right – especially with today’s foodie fixation on locally-produced fruits, vegetables, dairy and meats. If you’ve ever dreamed of quitting your job and becoming a farmer, check out Penn State’s four-week class in Point Breeze. They’ll help you figure out your goal, assess the risks,  and creating an action plan. Cost is $100 per person or $150 per “business unit.” For an application or more information, contact Heather Mikulas at 412-473-2540.

Sample fare from many of the restaurants chosen by Pittsburgh Magazine’s editors and readers as the best of 2010 at the annual Best Restaurants Party. Burghilicious favorites in attendance include Franktuary, Seviche, Piccolo Forno and Kaya (hey, guess I should write about those last two) plus places I’ve wanted to try for a while now, including Mio Kitchen & Wine Bar, Bistro 19 and Avenue B.

The Pittsburgh Magazine’s Best Restaurants Party is also the kick-off for Local Restaurant Week! So far, about 30 are signed up, with more being added daily. Local Independents will be offering $20.10 dining options… See the site (LocalRestaurantWeek.com) for the updated participants, and let your favorite restaurants know to get on-board!
